We have a full-change model of Kia's flagship midsize sedan, the K5, and a new K5.
The K5, which debuted recently, is a model that has been reborn as a third generation as a title. With a completely refreshed platform following the first generation introduced in early 2010 and the second generation in 2015, the company has four power trains: 2.0-liter gasoline, 2.0-liter LPG, 2.0-liter hybrid and 1.6-liter gasoline turbo. In addition, the design, like the first generation, was refined and sporty, attracting a lot of attention even before its launch.
The high-end design, extensive selection of powertrains and colorful comforts/safety equipment have brought the market’s attention from the sibling and rival Sonata. This resulted in 7,000 pre-contract results on the first day, the highest number of contracts in Kia's history. Finally, the new K5, which drew much attention from the market, with 16,000 pre-orders in advance.
We looked at the test drive to see what sensitivities and attractions are like in real life, not just in the visible areas.
External design
There will be a variety of factors in the popularity of 3rd generation K5. But I don't think there's any doubt that great exterior design played a very important role. Like the first generation K5 did in 2010, the third generation is also attracting attention by applying a "cleared" and "close-knit" and "sporty" design that was not seen in previous Korean cars or mid-size sedans. It’s not just a nice, cool drawing, it’s a great blend of front-to-side and rear design, but it’s also a great.
First of all, if you look at the front, it's a very agile and aggressive configuration that creates a 'sporty' atmosphere. The identity of the K5 from the first generation to the second generation is captured and expressed in a more powerful way. The horizontal, long-drawn head lamps and radiator grille are design elements that penetrate the K5 from the first to the third generation. Generation 3 has added intensity by applying a reverse slant structure that gently penetrates the head lamps into the body, while LED DRLs are also differentiated by the appearance of climbing the body side lines.
The pattern of the radiator grille, reminiscent of the Shark Skin, and the bumper-passia as the speedboat moves forward creating a new and dynamic image.
The sporty atmosphere produced by K5 peaks from the side. The 3rd generation platform with reduced center of gravity takes the height of the headlamps and hood lower than that of the fleet model, the maximum wheelbase in its class and the front overhang pulled forward create a dynamic stand. And a smoothly falling loop line.
The unique chromeline applied to both the roofline and K5 models, which fell smoothly to the trunk lid, had the effect of making the K5’s body look like a fast-back. The more steeply drawn chromosomes have the distracting effect, and the trunk lid’s decoration, which is like a long extension of the glass behind it, makes a regular sedan look like a sporty fast-back.
Even in bright colors, design elements for design shine easily, but I think it will have a more dramatic effect in deep and dark colors.
If the identity of the K5 is expressed more dramatically from the front and the side, the rear is applied to the latest Kia design elements. Not only horizontal tail lamps, but also the graphic that is lit in a rhythmical pattern when the lights are lit, are the design elements that were first introduced in the K7 Premiere, which conducted facelift. In addition, the imaging tips, which remind you of dual mufflers, were also applied through K7, Sportage, and Mohave.
Diffuser prepared at the bottom of the bumper, air-vent on the side, and trunk lid slightly folded at the end show sports and emphasize the overall design. Personally, I think it would have been better to inherit the form shown in the first and second generations than the long left/right tail lamps.
Internal design
Like the outside world, the interior features K5's all-time K5 features and the latest Kia's identity. The interior design in the larger frame adopts a horizontal layout that makes the car look bigger and wider, while the interior components, including infotainment, adjust the angle slightly towards the driver’s seat to blend the first and second generation interior. Of course, the interior finish quality, materials, and style of expression are among the best in its class, as if not to follow the shortcomings of the fleet model.
The D cut steering wheel, which applies to 1.6L petrol turbo models, is familiar with the configuration but has been beautifully finished, and the dashboard beyond the steering wheel features a 12.3 inch full-color LCD to deliver driving-related information in a spectacular and sensuous manner.
In particular, the instrument panel's theme has a new GUI that is different from the existing Kia Motors. You can choose a theme that not only configures graphics according to driving mode differently from K7, K9, and Mohave, but also changes graphics on your own depending on the ambient temperature, time and weather. When it snows in the real world, you can see the effects of snowing in the cluster, sun rising over time, sun setting, and so on.
Although not connected to a 12.3 inch color LCD cluster, the infotainment display, which is located at the same height and minimizes line of sight movement, is applicable to the 10.25 inch wide type. The content includes navigation, multimedia and surround views, as well as the pure black box of the cam, which is the build-in of KatoHome’s IOT, with almost everything available to Kia.
The GUI changes of infotainment are also noticeable. The GUI, which was difficult to distinguish from Hyundai Motor, has been newly applied using magenta color instead of the GUI. While simple presentation of information on the home screen, application of a completely new icon, and consistent color may give good marks, the question remains: What is different than color compared to Hyundai's Aqua UI in the New Grandeur?
Below the infotainment display is an air-vent with additional pin details and a touch-operated air-conditioning controller. All of the buttons on the infotainment are touch-sensitive. The air conditioner is equipped with an air-cleaner function that measures the concentration of particulate matter in the vehicle and controls air quality through air-clean mode.
If Hyundai, including the Sonata, has applied button-type electronic gear, Kia's choice is the dial type. Gear selection is achieved by rotating the dial in a suitable tension, manual mode shifts utilise the paddle shift on the steering wheel. Under the electric gear, a small dial for driving mode selection is located, followed by a smart device charger that has been changed to a storage format.
Interior space
There is ample room for both the front and rear seats, as Kia has a reputation for securing indoor space. Different trims, but the leather seats in the Demonstration Drive Signature Trim have great color and leather texture. Kia Motors uses quilting but does not select a common diamond pattern, and its color scheme using black and saddle brown is impeccable.
Of course, there is plenty of room for a midsize sedan as well.
The most leisurely available wheelbase in its class will allow for room space, especially rear seating. As if to live up to that, the K5's backseat responds with a leisurely legroom and a fairly comfortable seat. However, the headroom was a bit small with a loopline that fell so smoothly that it reminded me of a fast bag. The headroom felt a bit stuffy when a tall adult sat in a pavilion, although the interior was dug deep into the interior and made room for the headroom.
Loadspace
The trunk capacity of the third-generation K5 that supports Ski Thru but still does not support split folding at 60:40.
Powertrain
As described in the introduction, the full-changed K5 now has a total of four power trains. The dual demonstrator combines a 1.6 litre petrol turbo engine with an automatic eight speed transmission to deliver a maximum output of 180/5,500 (ps/rpm) and a maximum torque of 27.0/1,500-4500 (kgf.m/rpm). Efficiency is 13.2 km/l (City 11.8 km/l Highway 15.4 km/l) and CO2 emissions 127 g/km/l based on a demonstrator 18-inch tire.
